A wand is a quasi-sentient magical instrument through which a witch or wizard channels her or his magical powers to centralise the effects for more complex results. Magic with a wand is usually performed with an incantation. Wands are manufactured and sold by wand makers, the most famous of these in Great Britain being Ollivander
The characteristics of a wand are its length and its flexibility. But the most important ones are the nucleus or core and the material (magical wood) from which is made. All these different factors have various effects on the character of the wand, but these rules are subtle. The characteristics of a wand also seem to have some influence over which kinds of magic the wand is particularly suited for
A wand´s length depends on the wizard or witch´s own stature. Taller wizards will have longer wands while shorter witches will posses smaller wands. The average length goes from 12 cm to 17 cm
The scale of flexibility of a wand goes from: flexible, springy, sturdy and inflexible. These characteristics determine if the wand is easier or more difficult to master, but also the power of the incantation or the spell we are able to perform. Flexible wands are easier to use and very adaptable to any kind of wizard. Sturdy and inflexible wands are more difficult to master but they cast more powerful spells. Besides, inflexible wands are almost impossible to change allegiance from one wizard to another, even if won by combat.
The three 'common' cores are dragon heartstrings, phoenix tail feathers, and unicorn tail hairs:
– Wands made with a dragon heartstrings core are the most powerful and produce the most flamboyant spells. Among Dark wizards, these cores are the most common. They bond strongly with their current owner, even if won from their original master as they can change allegiance easily. In Hogwarts Houses, Slytherins most commonly have wands with this core, though the power they possess often bonds with Gryffindors and Ravenclaws (they tend to overwhelm Hufflepuffs)
– Wands that have a phoenix tail feather core are quite popular, though they are rare. They are quite versatile and very powerful, particularly with the Defence Against the Dark Arts. They occasionally act of their own accord, which many witches and wizards dislike very much. They are the hardest to tame and make one's own, and their allegiance is typically hard won, but they are very loyal and not easily won from their original master. While they are most common among Gryffindors, they are not unusual among Ravenclaws or Hufflepuffs.
– Wands made with a unicorn tail hair are some of the most reliable, producing consistent magic with rare fluctuations or blockages. They are very faithful to their first owners, regardless of how accomplished the witch or wizard was. hey are the absolute best with the healing arts (due to the healing capacity of unicorn blood), though they perform well with Charms and Transfiguration. They generally select gentle yet intelligent users, making it more common with Ravenclaws or Hufflepuffs.
With regard to the last characteristic, among the most common woods used are oak, cherry, vine, rowan, cedar, ivy, rosewood, blackthorn, willow, elm, ash, mahogany, yew, birch, aspen, and elder
– Apple: wands are favourable for a student who has skills in Herbology or Care of Magical Creatures. They are easily overwhelmed, so are rarely combined with powerful cores. This kind of wand would not work well with the Dark Arts
– Elm: Wands are believed to only perform magic for pure-blooded wizards. Wands made of this wood generally produce fewer accidents and foolish errors, and perform some of the most elegant charms and spells. In the right hands, these sophisticated wands can produce highly advanced magic
– Holly wands are brilliant at repelling dark spirits at demons, making its behaviour pertaining to the Defence Against the Dark Arts remarkable. Wands of holly are fairly rare, though they are considered protective
– Maple: They are fairly adaptable, though they are quite sturdy. They despise a a life without ambition, thus choosing travellers and explorers for masters. A witch or wizard who possesses a maple wand has generally had a high status, since the wand has a reputation of selecting high achievers.
– Oak wands are quite loyal, much like a friend to the wizard it selects. Owners of oak wands generally have excellent intuition, marking them as being good with Divination, and of the magic of the natural world, marking them as being good with Herbology. The wands are sturdy and reliable that help with the Defence Against the Dark Arts and Transfiguration
– Pear wands are golden in colour, and possess superb magical powers. They give their best to warm-hearted, generous, and wise individuals. Pear wands are normally found in the hands of popular and well-respected witches or wizards, and are never found with those who practice the Dark Arts
– Pine wands are very quick to learn, meaning that they are less powerful. This does not mean that they are weak, though! They are quiet, but excellent for the art of Divination. These wands will always choose a master who is seen as being a loner, intriguing, and maybe mysterious. The 'ideal' master is also independent and individual
– Willow wands are very favourable to Charms work, non-verbal spells, and healing magic, which makes sense given that willow trees are often known as the tree of enchantment. The wands are quite willing and considered rather feminine
